Stage 37 - Puebla de Sanabria to Requejo de Sanabria (14km): 05/10/2014 08:25
Today saw us walking through a wooded area |
We were
expecting today's walk to be no more than 13km but we managed to make it
longer. We followed the instructions we were given by fellow Peregrinos but
lost confidence when we hadn't seen an arrow or any other marker after walking
700 metres. Maps and SatNav failed to reassure us so we retraced our steps. At
8:30 on a Sunday there were few people around but eventually we stopped a
police car and learned that we were right the first time. Another 100 metres
would have brought us to a marker.
It was
another cold morning but was uneventful after that. We did find ourselves
walking on roads when we felt we should have been on a path. When we were on
paths they varied greatly. The surroundings were always pleasant, except
going past a quarry. At times the path resembled a dried up river bed with
large stones rolling under our feet. At one point we saw a small deer. It kept
on the path in front of us for a little bit but disappeared as soon as I tried
to take a photograph.
Our accommodation |
Apart
from cyclists we have met no other peregrinos today and we seem to be on our
own in a 20-bed albergue. Actually we are living in luxury tonight. We have top
and bottom sheets, pillow case, eiderdown and towels. OK, we had to make up the
bed but we didn't have to get out the sleeping bag or sleeping bag liner or use
the towels that we washed yesterday.
We have
arrived in the mountains shown in Saturday's photos but have only climbed a
little way. Tomorrow will be tougher. For those who know Inishowen I expect it
to be like walking from the Glen Shore to Moville via the Glen Hill, in both
distance and elevation. The main difference is that we are already at 1,000
metres and will come back down to that after climbing to 1,350 metres.
