A modern Camino marker |
Today's
13.75km into Xunqueira de Ambia was more than enough for us after
yesterday's exertions. We both suffered from what we think was too much
reliance on our walking poles while on the mountain. Pauline had aches in her
arms while coming down yesterday and I woke up in the middle of the night with
pains in my hands. We decided to give the poles a rest today and we seem to
have recovered.
We had
what sounded like torrential rain for much of the night and it was still
raining heavily when got up this morning. We were under no pressure to leave
early and I didn't want to be searching for yellow arrows on a dark rainy
morning so we didn't start walking until 8:50am. By then the rain had eased
considerably and it stopped altogether soon after we set out.

Along the way |
We had
climbs at the start and towards the end of the walk but nothing too severe. For
much of the time we were walking across a plain with yesterday's mountains
being left further and further behind.
Tonight
we are staying in a 20-bed albergue which is more than half full. There are a
number of Spanish and German people in the other dormitory and we are sharing
with Terry from Omagh, Steph from Germany and a man from Slovenia. Terry did
the Camino Frances in 2010, the same year as us. Since then he has completed
two more, did a combination of the del Norte and the Primitivo and this is his
second Via de la Plata. He does walk much faster than us - I think he said this
is his 25th day out of Seville.
We had
a bit of drama last night after we finished eating. I received a call from our
home alarm monitoring company to say that our alarm had been triggered. After
some futile calls we got through to our neighbour, Cathy, who contacted another
neighbour Joe (who has a key) and his son Colm to check it out. We had an
anxious wait before we were given the all clear.
