Stage 40 - Vilavella to A Gudiña (12.5km): 08/10/2014 08:35

There wasn't much to photograph in the rain today so I'll show you the fine meal we enjoyed in a local bar

We had just started today's walk when Pauline said to me, "If we were back in Menlo and looked out at today's rain, we would have turned over and gone back to sleep". She was right, of course, we wouldn't even have considered our daily walk round the quarry, yet here we were in a remote part of Spain, embarking on a 12km walk and the rain lashing down on us.

For most Peregrinos our walk would have been the second half of a 24km stage but we anticipated that yesterday's climb would be tough and decided to make two days of it. That gave us an easy day today and with effective wet gear the rain didn't bother us too much. Our main concession to the rain was that we stuck to the road, not knowing what the path would be like.

We completed the 12.5km in just over three hours. The rain did stop on a few occasions but never for very long. It continued for much of the day after we arrived in A Gudiña and got much worse in the evening. That meant we had no chance to explore what looked like an interesting town. We did venture out in the rain but only as far as the nearest bar for bite to eat.

We are hoping for better tomorrow. The sun should be shining by noon, according to the forecast I looked at this morning, but a Dutch cyclist with whom we dined says tomorrow will be the same and we'll see the sun on Friday.

By the way, there are seven of us in this 24-bed albergue - apart from ourselves we have a Spanish man who is walking and four cyclists from Spain (2), Slovenia and Holland. Each of us either arrived in wet clothes or has washing that failed to dry. The dormitory is therefore strewn with damp clothes, hanging over radiators and from bed ends.

750m completed, 198km to go

Entering A Gudiña

Not a pretty site and pretty useless on the day that was in it
