Stage 49 - A Laxe to Bandeira (17km): 18/10/2014 08:05

The Camino crossed an unusually high Roman bridge

The rain was bouncing off the roof of the albergue as we got out of bed this morning. Fortunately it had eased off to a light drizzle by the time we were on the road. We walked half a kilometre to Ma Jose for breakfast along with David and Yvonne and then set off.

Much of the morning's walk was downhill into a river valley which we crossed via an unusually high Roman bridge. The paths varied in quality with some quite uneven and stony. That caused a problem for Pauline as early in the day she found her boots were still hurting her toe. She is now walking in her trekking sandals and, given her medical history, is unhappy on rough downhill terrain without ankle support. Today we walked the final 7km, almost entirely downhill, on the road, and in bright sunshine. We expect to walk much of the remainder of our Camino on the road, to be sure that Pauline enters Santiago under her own steam.

Someone offered to take our photograph
Two or three weeks ago we decided to eat in an albergue which had a microwave oven, as most had until then. We bought a couple of meals to put in the microwave and then had lunch in a local restaurant. We ate so well, however, that we decided to skip dinner. Since then we have been carrying two microwave meals, looking in vain for a microwave in every albergue we came to. At last we have found one and will be eating in tonight.

We will be eating in again tomorrow as there are no services near our final albergue. We will not, however, be relying on it having a microwave.

Unusually for the villages of this Camino the church in Bandeira has a 7:30pm Mass on Saturdays, so we were able to go to Mass before dinner. Bandeira is something more than a village.

The only other person staying in the albergue tonight is David from Australia.

922km completed, 33km to go
