Stage 19 - Galisteo to Carcaboso (11.2km): 16/09/2014 07:42
Sunrise on leaving Galisteo |
We had an easy enough walk with few ups and
downs. The only negative was that we were on tarmac all the way which is
tougher on the feet. We knew we would reach a village after 6km and hoped to
stop for breakfast but nothing was opened when we arrived shortly after nine.
Instead we sat on a bench and ate an energy bar. As we were about to set off it
started to rain. It threatened to be heavy and so we covered our backpacks and
donned rain jackets. Minutes later it had petered out. A few more drops of rain
fell as we entered Carcaboso but that too was a false alarm. Some hours later
it was bucketing down.
We are staying in Senora Elena's albergue.
This is where we planned to stay but I don't think we were going to have any
other option after we ordered breakfast at the bar next door. Senora Elena was
quickly on the scene to check out our intentions. She then wandered up the town
to attend to some business but, when she returned, she sat down beside us until
we were ready to register. It is a good choice - we have an ensuite double room
for €22 (€11 each). It is a fine place with a bit of character, to match Senora
Elena who goes up the town fairly sharpish with her wheeled Zimmer frame.
Since we arrived we have been joined by
eight other Peregrinos, including Mary Power, from Kilkenny city - she is
actually from Limerick but I suspect she has lived in Kilkenny longer than we
have lived in Menlo. We had been hearing about an Irish woman called Mary
coming along one stage behind us, but today she walked 32km and caught up. Last
year Mary walked from Seville to Merida. This year she is walking from Merida
to Salamanca.
317km
completed, 615km to go
I cannot find any photographs taken in Carcaboso. I find that strange but perhaps I didn't take any due to the rain.
